Collecting Sofubi or Soft-Vinyl Toys

Collecting Sofubi or Soft-Vinyl Toys

Hey On-That Fans,

Last year, I had the privilege to visit Japan for my birthday celebration. I spent about a week in Tokyo and a couple days each in Kyoto and Osaka. Although I wanted to visit Japan for many reasons, spending way too much money on sofubi toys was the biggest reason.

If you are not familiar with the wonderful world of sofubi, let me educate you for a minute. Sofubi is a Japanese soft vinyl toy. They have been around more or less since toys were produced. Some of today's most beloved sofubi toys are independent artists that produce, paint, and sell their own designs. A trait I love about sofubi is that it features mostly monstrous designs not unlike Godzilla and other kaiju. Also, the coloring is a big reason I collect, as many artists will have other artists paint their sofubi toys, thus creating amazing collaboration pieces.

While I was in Japan, I frequented many stores that stock sofubi toys, and the best place to find unique designs was the Mandarake stores. Mandarake is more or less a second-hand chain that caters to video games, music, movies, comics/manga, and toys. The perfect place to find some real sofubi treasures, both modern and vintage.

I'm very excited to announce that as this site grows, I will be offering exclusive sofubi pieces for sale and producing our own under the On That Toy brand. Thanks for your time and consideration, have a good one!
